When Do I Disclose My Criminal Background?
Like many things in life, the answer is “It depends.”
As I say in many other blog entries, always tell the truth, but be strategic about it.
Depending on the situation, you may not ever need to disclose your criminal conviction history.
Deciding whether to disclose actually begins with doing a little research before you apply at a company or have an interview. If it is a big company, do an internet search to see if they do a background check (it is likely they do in a large company) and what type it is. Often others who have been through the hiring process will post reviews online revealing whether or not the company runs a background check, and whether it is only checking for felonies, or adds misdemeanors as well. If you can find out this information, that will help guide your decision about whether and when to disclose.
If it is a small company local company, you may not be able to find out with online research, so you should think if there is anyone you know that is familiar with the company or works there. Do any of your friends or family know anyone there you can ask?
If you can’t ultimately figure out if the company runs a background check, you should make the assumption there will be one, and prepare as if you will need to disclose your criminal record.
If this is the case, then I recommend that you disclose your criminal background AFTER the first interview, but BEFORE the company runs the actual background check. The video below provides an excellent overview of how and when to disclose your criminal background. Pairing this with a written Letter of Explanation as detailed in this blog entry, is a great way to handle any questions about your past.
